Hannah’s Story

Created by Christine one year ago

Hannah has always been a bit of a medical mystery. After first injuring her foot in 2019, Hannah spent most of her time in school sat in reception talking, which to any 13/14 year old was far more entertaining than lessons! After repeated injuries and her ankle not improving, Hannah was later diagnosed with CRPS (complex regional pain syndrome) in 2020 one of the most painful conditions known to be diagnosed. Hannah faced chronic pain everyday but always took this in her stride.

Then came lockdown.

Lockdown put quite the spanner in the works preventing Hannahs treatment from taking place.

October 2020 Hannah started being sick - we knew this wasnt right as food is always at the heart of us Debneys.

As these symptoms progressed hannah began to lose weight and was hospitalised in January 2021. She was in and out of hospital for the next 6 months eventually leaving her with a feeding tube- something she had to accept.

August 2021 she couldn’t pass urine and ended up having a suprapubic catheter. Hannah had to manage to live with all these problems as well as having to accept being in a wheelchair in the final years of school.

March of 2022 Hannah was readmitted to RHH. As she had turned 16, mom had her moved to adult gastroentrology and here she was finally diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos sydrome (a rare genetic condition that affects all collagen in the body). After finally starting to gather the pieces to Hannahs jigsaw and trying all the different ways of feeding along the way, Hannahs symptoms progressed leaving her with type 3 intestinal failure and the only option of feeding was using parental nutrition.

Hannah got on well with this type of feed and we finally thought we were onto a winner. Unfortunately, due to the risks involved in this form of nutrition Hannah contracted sepsis in the Decmber of 2022. Admitted again, Hannah became a resident at the hospital to which she decorated her room the way she wanted!

After multiple reattempts to try and get nutrition into her, Hannahs body sadly kept contracting sepsis until eventually there were no further options availbale that she could be offered.

On the 24th June 2023, Hannah was transferred to Walsall Acorns childrens Hospice, the next 15 days were spent creating happy memories with her and the family.

On the 9th of July 2023, Hannah lost her fight to this cruel disease. She will never be forgotten in the inspiration she gave and her wonderful smile and her kindness for others 🩷
